I’ve noticed a couple of pictures of churches and it brought to mind a parish directory I saw years ago from a parish pastored by a ‘forward’ thinking priest. On the cover was not a picture of the church, but of the people! Hundreds and hundreds standing and they may even have been waving. I remember many smiles and thinking, oh yeh, the parish IS the people.

Sorry if I am taking away some from the beautiful structures, but afterall we need to remember too just where is the “temple” of God. Within the hearts of God’s people.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could gather the people for a group photograph? Reminds me of an episode from “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” in which the entire town had their picture taken as a group.

The heart of the temple is in the lives of God’s people. I often wonder how we can instill that realization more clearly in our parishioners. The tremendous dignity we have as a son or daughter of God.

My display of church structures is sort of a hobby I have taken up. I was on vacation recently in Upper Michigan and passed by several little country Catholic churches in disrepair and I thought it might be fun to photograph each Catholic church I drive by, especially those that will soon be closed or torn down. Lots of history in each one of them. Lots of heart.
