50th Anniversary of “The Pill”

My good friend Deacon Joe recently sent me a couple of links to a two-part article written by Michelle Bauman, a junior at the University of Dallas where she is studying politics and journalism.

Despite its widespread use, the birth control pill remains a morally gravely flawed method of family planning. Ms. Bauman has described well its effects upon us.

Log on to: Catholic News Agency and on to the second part at: Part Two to read her comments.

I would welcome your comments in return.

okay, part of the argument that is missing here is the protection of breastfeeding. Where exclusive breastfeeding is supported most women have childbirth spacing of 2 yrs. on average. Part of the crime here with advent of the BCP was the marketing of infant formula. Introduction of formula increases a womens fertility and thus hastens the need for birth control. One could argue that choices are made, but I do believe many women do not make informed choices, due to marketing from corporations.
I wish all women and men were equally educated, intelligent, and informed, but as humans that is our stuggle. I had a mom recently that responded to me “you mean it’s good for me to read to my baby?”

    Thanks,Karen for this comment.
I never considered the connection between the decline (and discouragement of its practice) of exclusive breastfeeding and the advent of the BCP.

(By the way for all who are reading this, Karen is an expert in her field. She is a lactation consultant and has traveled to numerous places in the US. She can fill you in with more about her work if she wants.)
